With this post we will show you How to Order SAS-Canada Drill Bushings making sure you receive the correct type specific to your needs.
We often find customers hesitant about the naming of drill bushings. Many customers seem unsure about the name of the drill bushings, when visiting our website or ordering drill bushings on-line.
This can be attributed, in part, to regional, or even inhouse shop names and adjectives used to describe these drilling aids and tools. There is a hesitance when referring to the OD (outside diameter) and ID (inside diameter). Some customers descried the bushings they want as “slip fit”, “press fit”, and “renewable”. We avoid using these terms as it unnecessarily adds to the uncertainty.
Here is how SAS-Canada Identifies its Bushings
We always confirm the type of drill bushing the customer really needs and wants. So… we have standardized our nomenclator (the names) we use to describe our Drill Bushings. We manufacture three basic type of drill bushings.
OD Drill Bushings
To help clarify, we also refer to these as “Transfer Bushings”. The outside diameter varies depending of the size of fastener hole being transferred from the old component to the new component. We produce these drill bushings in sets and also market them as individual bushings to meet our customer’s needs. The typical inside diameter of these bushings is intended to accurately produce a pilot hole in the new components, which is subsequently upsized on final fastener hole preparation and final assembly.
SAS-Canada Standard Sizes
The standard sizes of SAS-Canada OD Drill Bushings have been selected to correspond to the nominal, undersized and oversized fasteners commonly used in the aerospace industry. These standard bushings are produced with an OD as small as 0.1285” and as large as 0.7600”. All of our standard OD Drill Bushings with an outside diameter equal to or smaller than 0.1875” have a pilot hole for a #40 drill. Bushings with an outside diameter larger than 0.1875” have been machined with a pilot hole for a #30 drill. We have also machined custom bushings with a specific bore size to accommodate a customer’s needs.
ID Drill Bushings
The inside diameter (bore) of these bushings vary to accommodate the size of a drill bit being guided by the bushing. Again, the size of the bore has been chosen to guide a factional, number or letter drill bit to produce a nominal, undersized or oversized drilled hole to accommodate fasteners commonly used in the aerospace industry. The outside diameter of the SAS-Canada ID Drill Bushings is either 0.5000” or 0.7500” depending of the size of ID of the bushing.
Designed -Works with SAS-Canada Drill Bushing Block
These bushings have been specifically designed to work seamlessly with the SAS-Canada Drill Bushing Block. Pairing our Drill Bushing Block with an ID Drill Bushing, ensures an accurate fastener hole perpendicular (square, 90 degrees) to the component surface. Together they can also be used on a curved surface to produce a fastener hole perpendicular to the tangent of the curved surface, like on the leading edge of a wing or flight control surface.
Threaded Drill Bushings
Threaded Drill Bushings are very similar to the ID Drill Bushings note above. They have been machined with the same ID sizes as to produce a nominal, undersized and oversized drilled hole to accommodate fasteners commonly used in the aerospace industry. The difference is a ½”-13 UNC thread as been machined on the outer diameter of the bushing. As well a 9/16” hex has been machined on the top of the bushing. Moreover, these bushings have been specifically designed to work seamlessly with the SAS-Canada Drill Bushing Egg Cup (shown in photo above). They can be used on flat or curved surfaces like the ID Drill Bushings.
